Prime Minister Hon. James Marape met with ExxonMobil executives at their headquarters to discuss major LNG projects. The meeting focused on Papua LNG, P’nyang LNG, and Wildebeest gas development plans.
Prime Minister Hon. James Marape called the talks “substantive, productive, and forward-looking,” and highlighted ExxonMobil’s strong commitment to PNG’s resource sector.
“ExxonMobil reaffirmed its commitment to the sequencing and development of Papua LNG, P’nyang LNG, and Wildebeest,” he said.
“All three remain key parts of their investment plans. Sequencing is important to ensure ongoing construction, investment, and jobs for PNG.”
The executives updated him on Papua LNG, led by TotalEnergies. They acknowledged some cost pressures but confirmed all partners remain committed to resolving issues and moving forward.
A joint meeting with PNG, TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, and other stakeholders is planned to address recent cost increases and decide on the final investment.
Regarding Wildebeest, a new gas field in exploration, ExxonMobil confirmed ongoing deep-well activities and expressed interest in future partnership with PNG.
PM Marape emphasized the planned order: Papua LNG first, followed by P’nyang, then Wildebeest.
“This sequence will create a pipeline of jobs and revenue over the next 10 to 15 years,” he explained.
He also praised the success of PNG nationals at ExxonMobil’s Houston headquarters, where more than six are now employed.
“As Education Minister in 2008–2009, I started training Papua New Guineans for LNG projects. Today, I am proud to see our people leading and working globally,” he said.
After the Houston meeting, Marape traveled overnight to Washington, D.C., to continue efforts to strengthen relations with the U.S. and attract investment.
He concluded by thanking ExxonMobil for its partnership and reaffirming PNG’s commitment to responsible resource development.
“With trusted partners like ExxonMobil and TotalEnergies, we believe these projects will bring economic growth and lasting benefits to our people,” he said.
