The European Union-funded Forestry-Climate Change-Biodiversity (FCCB) Programme is gearing up for a promising second year as it aims to deliver substantial environmental and social outcomes.
Key stakeholders gathered recently at the Hilton Hotel for a pivotal Steering Committee meeting, led by high-level representatives from the EU Delegation and Papua New Guinea’s Department of National Planning and Monitoring.
During the meeting, H.E Jacques Fradin, the EU Ambassador to PNG, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the EU and PNG.
“Our shared commitment to environmental preservation is crucial for the sustainable future of Papua New Guinea and its people,” he stated.
“Together, we can combat deforestation, mitigate climate change, and conserve biodiversity for generations to come.”
Secretary of the Department of National Planning and Monitoring, Mr Koney Samuel, while supporting the initiative, highlighted the programme’s role in addressing pressing environmental challenges faced by Papua New Guinea.
“The FCCB Programme is not just about environmental outcomes, it is also about creating sustainable livelihoods for our communities.
“By partnering with local stakeholders, we can ensure that our efforts translate into real benefits for our people,” Mr Samuel noted.
Since its launch in October 2023, the FCCB Programme has made significant progress in its initiatives.
The Steering Committee discussed key achievements and outlined plans for the upcoming year, focusing on strategic directions to enhance ongoing efforts.
The FCCB Programme is designed to tackle critical issues such as deforestation, climate change, and biodiversity loss in Papua New Guinea.
It aims to promote sustainable practices that not only protect the environment but also improve livelihoods, particularly for local communities that depend on forest resources.
As the programme enters its second year, the commitment from both the European Union and the Papua New Guinea government signals a strong dedication to securing a more sustainable future, benefiting both the environment and the communities that rely on it.
With the collaborative efforts of the Steering Committee and ongoing engagement with local stakeholders, the FCCB Programme is set to make a meaningful impact on combating climate change and preserving the rich biodiversity of Papua New Guinea.
