The Flag Lowering Ceremony on the evening of September 16th, 2024, at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium marked the conclusion of Papua New Guinea’s 49th Independence Day celebrations. With the nation’s flag slowly descending, the atmosphere was filled with reflection and national pride.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of Governor of NCD, Hon. Powes Parkop, as Guest of Honor, and Governor General Sir Bob Bofeng Dadai, who delivered a powerful address. In his speech, Sir Bob called on public servants to remain committed and dedicated to moving the country forward, emphasizing their pivotal role in building a prosperous future for Papua New Guinea.
As the sun set on the day of celebrations, the flag lowering symbolized both the closing of a chapter and the anticipation of the nation’s 50th anniversary of independence next year.
