Monday 12 August 2024

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the people of Papua New Guinea to the family, friends, and business associates of the esteemed businessman, Sir Soekandar Tjandra, who passed away in Singapore on Friday 9 August 2024.

“On behalf of the people of Papua New Guinea, I pass on our heartfelt condolences to Lady Susan, family, friends, and business associates of leading businessman, Sir Soekandar Tjandra, who passed away in Singapore,” Prime Minister Marape said.

Sir Soekandar and  spouse  Lady Susan, started the Papindo Group of Companies in Lae in 1974.

“What began as a small store on 7th Street in Lae has grown into the largest nationally-owned retail chain in Papua New Guinea, providing jobs to hundreds of Papua New Guineans across the country.

“Sir Soekandar and Lady Susan Tjandra were well-known for their continuous support of the people of Lae City and Papua New Guinea, for which we are all grateful.” Prime Minister Marape added.

He also noted that despite facing challenges, including violence and looting, Sir Soekandar and Papindo remained committed to serving the country. The most recent attack happened in January 2024.

“Sir Soekandar and Papindo have done so much for our country. As we prepare to celebrate 50 years of independence, I urge the people of Papua New Guinea to remember Sir Soekandar’s contributions and work towards a better future—a future he will, sadly, not be with us to celebrate,” said Prime Minister Marape.

The Prime Minister ended with a simple message: “Thank you, Sir Soekandar, for everything you have done for Papua New Guinea.”
