As Papua New Guinea approaches its 50th year of independence, Prime Minister James Marape has called on public servants nationwide to recommit to their roles and serve with renewed dedication. This aligns with the theme of the 9th Public Service Dedication Service, scheduled for Friday, January 10, 2025: “Year of Restoration in the Public Service.”
The 2025 Dedication Service for Public Servants aims to emphasize on the key roles of Public Servants in nation-building, and to inspire them to renew their commitment to serving the people of Papua New Guinea.
“These public servants are an inspiration,” Prime Minister Marape said. “They have chosen service over comfort and exemplify the true spirit of public service, which requires sacrifice and responsibility.”
Marape acknowledged the significant contributions of doctors, teachers, and other professionals who continue to work under challenging conditions. He emphasized the need for improved support for frontline workers, including police, teachers, and health professionals, while urging senior officials in Waigani to break free from complacency and provide essential resources.
Looking ahead to the dedication ceremony, the Prime Minister reminded public servants of their obligation to taxpayers who fund their salaries.
“True nation-building requires collective action,” Marape said. “We must serve with pride and purpose, ensuring Papua New Guinea continues to grow and prosper for the next 50 years. The responsibility is ours — it starts with each of us.”
In addition to praising current public servants, Marape honored the contributions of past public servants, emphasizing their foundational role in the nation’s growth and development.
Minister for Public Service, Hon. Joe Sungi, echoed the Prime Minister’s sentiments during a press conference.
“We, the public servants, are the missionaries of the government of PNG,” Sungi stated. “We are the faces of the government wherever we are, whether we are community health workers or teachers serving in the remotest parts of the country.”
He urged public servants across the country to dedicate time to cleaning government stations and reflecting on the nation’s progress as part of preparations for Papua New Guinea’s Golden Jubilee, which will be celebrated on September 16, 2025.
“This year is basically about preparations for the grand celebration on Papua New Guinea’s Golden Jubilee,” Sungi added.
The 2025 Public Service Dedication Service will be broadcast live on the National Information Center’s Facebook page and aired via radio and television through the National Broadcasting Corporation.
