Papua New Guinea has stepped forward to assist its Pacific neighbor Vanuatu following the devastating earthquake that struck the island nation earlier this week. Prime Minister Hon. James Marape announced today that the National Executive Council (NEC) has approved a K20 million relief package to support Vanuatu’s recovery efforts.
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the people of Vanuatu during this difficult time,” Prime Minister Marape said in a statement. “The National Executive Council’s decision to approve K20 million in relief reflects our commitment to standing with our Pacific neighbors in their time of need.”
The funding will enable the immediate deployment of essential aid, including a contingent of engineers, medics, and logistical experts from the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF). The assistance package will also include critical supplies such as food, clean water, and medical aid.
Prime Minister Marape highlighted the importance of regional solidarity and Papua New Guinea’s role as a member of the Pacific family.
“This is not just about delivering aid but also about reaffirming our shared commitment to the Pacific family. When one of us is impacted, we all stand together,” he said. “I encourage other Pacific nations and international partners to also step forward in support of Vanuatu’s recovery.”
The PNGDF is preparing to deploy its personnel to Vanuatu in the coming days, with a focus on immediate humanitarian assistance, search and rescue operations, and helping to restore essential services. The team will coordinate closely with Vanuatu’s National Disaster Management Office and other regional partners to ensure the response is effective and targeted.
Prime Minister Marape explained that the deployment reflects Papua New Guinea’s readiness to provide practical and meaningful support in the region.
“This funding will facilitate urgent assistance, including the mobilisation of PNGDF engineers, medics, and logistical experts, to deliver life-saving aid to our brothers and sisters in Vanuatu,” he said.
Vanuatu’s National Disaster Management Office has reported widespread destruction, including severe damage to infrastructure and the urgent need for shelter, clean water, and medical supplies. The PNG aid package and PNGDF deployment will play a critical role in addressing these needs and supporting long-term recovery efforts.
