Pope Francis touched down in the far northwestern part of Papua New Guinea, Vanimo today, arriving aboard an Australian C-130 military transport plane. His Holiness was warmly greeted by local Catholics and Church leaders eager to hear his message of peace and faith during his brief yet significant visit.
Addressing the crowd gathered in front of the Holy Cross Pro-Cathedral, Pope Francis expressed his deep appreciation for the enduring missionary work in the region, which has spanned over a century. The Pope acknowledged the sacrifices made by early missionaries, who began evangelizing in the area in the mid-19th century, and commended the modern-day missionaries who continue to spread the Gospel, often traveling vast distances to reach remote communities.
Pope Francis also took a moment to thank those who had traveled long distances to join him in Vanimo, acknowledging their commitment to their faith and their community.
His visit to Vanimo underscores the Vatican’s recognition of the vital role the Church plays in Papua New Guinea’s spiritual and social fabric, particularly in remote and underserved areas.
