Following the successful completion of Papua New Guinea’s first kidney transplant, Dr. Paki Mol, Chief Executive Officer of the Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH), last week expressed profound gratitude to the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) for their significant financial contribution of K10 million.

The support, under the leadership of NFA Managing Director Mr. Justin Ilakini, was instrumental in making the groundbreaking procedure a reality.

“On behalf of Port Moresby General Hospital and the Kidney Transplant Project Steering Committee, I wish to convey our sincere appreciation to the National Fisheries Authority for your generous funding support of K10.0 million towards the establishment and implementation of the Kidney Transplant Program at PMGH,” Dr. Mol stated.

He further emphasized the critical role of the NFA’s timely assistance, saying, “Your timely intervention and commitment to supporting this life-saving initiative have been instrumental in enabling the hospital to prepare for and proceed with the country’s first-ever kidney transplant.”

Dr. Mol also shared the news of the transplant itself, noting, “I am pleased to inform you that, following extensive preparations and clinical readiness, the transplant procedure will take place this afternoon, Wednesday 14th May 2025.”

Highlighting the significance of the partnership, Dr. Mol added, “This historic milestone would not have been possible without the National Fisheries Authority’s leadership and demonstration of corporate social responsibility towards advancing specialist health services in Papua New Guinea. Your contribution is a testament to the important partnerships between key sectors in driving transformative change in our health system.”

“We look forward to continuing this partnership as we work towards expanding the transplant program and ensuring long-term sustainability in line with national health priorities.”
