Sunday 14th September, 2025
The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, arrived in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea on Sunday the 14th of September 2025, as the UK’s official representative in marking the country’s 50th anniversary of the country’s Independence.
His Royal Highness (HRH) was warmly received with a 21 gun salute and was escorted to the Government House for the courtesy call to the Governor General of Papua New Guinea Sir Bob Bofeng Dadae.
Prince Edward’s visit runs from 14th to 17th September and is anchored in commemorating key moments in PNG’s history and reinforcing UK–PNG relations.
HRH Prince Edward will be presenting the new Regimental Colours to the First Royal Pacific Islands Regiment on his second day in the country- a deeply symbolic and historically significant event from historical, cultural, military, and diplomatic perspectives including; Symbol of Loyalty and Tradition, Recognition of Service and Sacrifice, Strengthening Commonwealth and Diplomatic Ties, Boost to Morale and National Pride and Reinforcing Military Discipline and Identity.
The presentation of new regimental colours to the First Royal Pacific Islands Regiment by the Duke of Edinburgh is more than a formal military event—it is a powerful symbol of heritage, international respect, and national unity. It honors the past, strengthens present ties, and inspires future generations of soldiers and citizens alike.
Prince Edward will be attending the dawn flag- raising ceremony, the awarding of the 50th Independence Anniversary Medals to citizens for distinguished services, the opening of the new National Court Complex and visits with local communities in Port Moresby.
Although Prince Edward’s arrival is part of a busy program of events throughout his stay, this visit comes at a somber time for the royal family: Edward will miss the funeral of the Duchess of Kent, who passed earlier in September
