The workshop which started on Thursday 23 January at the APEC Haus, with attendance from the NBC board, management, provincial station managers, National Government representatives and partners is set to evaluate the organization’s performance and set the course for 2025.

Minister Masiu highlighted the timely importance of this gathering, noting that the discussions held would have profound implications on the direction of the state broadcaster.

The theme of the workshop, “NBC 50 Years On: Where We Are Now and Where We Want to Be,” reflects the mission of NBC to revitalize and reposition it for future challenges and opportunities in broadcasting.

Minister Masiu recounted the organization’s struggles, describing how he viewed NBC as being in “the Intensive Care Unit” shortly after taking office in 2019.

He highlighted the successful transition to digital television broadcasting and enhancements made to radio signal coverage since 2019, and called on stakeholders to help collaborate and facilitate its progress and growth.

“Despite ongoing challenges, we have made significant strides,” he stated.

The ICT Minister reiterated one of the key achievements of the NBC since he took office, were the migration from analog to digital television, improvements to the radio signal via medium-wave transmission, and the commencement of renovations at provincial stations and headquarters.

Minister Masiu also announced future collaborations with provincial governments such as Manus Province, where they planned to enhance broadcasting infrastructure, including funding for new transmitter sites.

Minister Masiu expressed a strong commitment to ensuring that NBC aligns its resources and plans with the expectations of the National Government.

He acknowledged the persistent challenge of unreliable electricity supply, which has hindered NBC’s operations, particularly in remote areas. However, he assured attendees of ongoing efforts to restore and improve broadcasting capabilities across the nation.

Minister Masiu urged participants to engage actively with representatives from various departments to align NBC’s goals with national development strategies.

“NBC’s mission is to reach every citizen across Papua New Guinea, ensuring that all voices are heard.”
