Papua New Guinea is mourning the loss of Morobe Governor Hon. Luther Wenge, who passed away early on Saturday morning, 13 September 2025, at Port Moresby General Hospital. He died at about 6.30am after complications from surgery.

Prime Minister James Marape, who visited him at the hospital, described the late Governor as a “firebrand leader” who was widely loved in Morobe, especially in the rural areas.

“In Parliament, he was always vocal, participating in all areas of parliamentary business with reason, conviction and deep concern for his people,” Mr Marape said.

The Prime Minister said he was saddened that Governor Wenge would not be present as the nation celebrates its 50th Independence anniversary in two days’ time.

He extended condolences on behalf of his family, the people of Tari-Pori, the Pangu Party, and the coalition government to the Governor’s family and the people of Morobe Province.

Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso also expressed his grief, calling Governor Wenge’s passing a “tragic loss and shock for the people of Morobe and Papua New Guinea on the eve of our country’s 50th Independence celebrations.”

Hon. John Rosso described him as “a strong leader, a seasoned lawyer, and a man of principle who dedicated his life to serving the people of Morobe.”

He said Wenge’s leadership was marked by a steadfast commitment to justice, development, and the rights of the people.

Governor Wenge first served as Governor of Morobe from 1997 to 2012, before returning to office in 2022. Both leaders said his contribution to Morobe and the country would not be forgotten.

Plans for his funeral and repatriation to Morobe will be announced by the government in due course.
