Prime Minister James Marape has been invited by the United Nation’s to attend a high level Summit in New York in September 2024.
Papua New Guinea’s UN Resident Coordinator, Mr Richard Howard made this know during the 1st Inaugural NCD Youth Summit and Expo, where Mr Marape was attending as key speaker on 12 August, 2024, at the Apec Haus, Port Moresby.
“This September, in New York we will hold alongside the UN General Assembly, a meeting called; the Summit of the Future, and at that meeting, we have invited the Prime Minister Marape.
“Mr Marape is expected to make an intervention, on recommendations of how the UN can respond better to global crisis.
“For the UN, we are at a turning point, if you look around the world, you will see the many challenges we face in bringing parties together and helping to resolve conflicts and build lasting peace and to achieve the sustainable development goals,” Mr Howard said.
According to the UN official website: “The Summit is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future.
“Effective global cooperation is increasingly critical to our survival but difficult to achieve in an atmosphere of mistrust, using outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities.
“This once-in-a-generation opportunity serves as a moment to mend eroded trust and demonstrate that international cooperation can effectively achieve agreed goals and tackle emerging threats and opportunities.
“In September, world leaders will convene at the United Nations to adopt the Pact for the Future, which will include a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations as annexes”.
