Papua New Guinea and New Zealand have reaffirmed their deep friendship and partnership as both nations mark 50 years of diplomatic ties, during an official dinner in Port Moresby last night.

Prime Minister James Marape praised the long history and cultural connections shared by the two Pacific nations, describing PNG as “an ancient land” whose people “read the motive of the heart better than most.”

“Our past has been together. We value so much the friendship and relationship we’ve had for the last 50 years,” PM Marape said.

“Amidst the many tears we still carry, we choose to ignore the tears and work on our strength, to protect and preserve the peace and the blue continent we both share,” he added.

New Zealand Prime Minister Right Honorable Christopher Luxon, on his first official visit to PNG, said the relationship was built on decades of trust and people-to-people ties.

“I have to say, it’s fair to say, James, we have become great mates and firm friends ever since that extraordinary display of PNG hospitality,” Mr Luxon said.

He recalled how his plane broke down on a stopover last year, giving the two leaders unexpected hours together.

PM Luxon highlighted New Zealand’s longstanding support in defence, development, agriculture, and education.

“We want only the very best for you, our largest, vibrant Pacific neighbour and partner,” he said.
