Leaders from Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea joined together today at the Royal Port Moresby Golf Club for the WANSOL Prime Ministers Charity Golf Challenge.
The event was a friendly way to strengthen their relationship through sports and community support.
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele of Solomon Islands praised PNG for organizing the event and thanked the private companies that helped sponsor it.
“This event is deep, and your government is committed to deepening our relations in fair balance and collaboration on what we want,” he said.
He also announced that his government would give 30,000 Kina to support the event and promised to show every transfer of the money to the public.
Prime Minister James Marape of PNG talked about the close ties between the two countries.
“Today, just to encourage charity, encourage sport, encourage community, the name Wansol means we’re from the same space,” he said.
Marape explained that PNG and Solomon Islands have been connected for many years through culture, family, and shared history.
He also said PNG has many businesses operating in Solomon Islands and encouraged more investment and partnership.
Both leaders looked forward to more exchanges and sports events. Marape invited Solomon Islands leaders to visit PNG again.
He also mentioned that Solomon Islands had just won the first-ever golf trophy in the contest, joking that golf is a sport you can enjoy even into your 80s.
The event showed how strong the friendship is between Solomon Islands and PNG, built on shared history and a love for sports that brings people together.
