The Ministry of Police has undergone a formal and orderly leadership transition, with outgoing Police Minister Peter L. Tsiamalili Jr. handing over the portfolio to incoming Minister Sir John Pundari.

In a joint statement released on Monday, both leaders affirmed their commitment to continuity, stability, and coordinated reform within the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC). The transition, they said, marks a constructive shift aimed at strengthening the nation’s policing capability and governance.

Tsiamalili, who served from 2023 to 2025, reflected on a challenging period marked by national security concerns and significant pressure on policing operations. He noted that despite these obstacles, the police force had made measurable progress in stabilising operations and improving governance structures.

Independent analysis published in the Post Courier on 31 December 2025 reportedly supported this view, highlighting that the RPNGC had entered “a phase of institutional transition and reform” after a difficult two‑year period.

Tsiamalili said his focus during his tenure was on restoring stability within the force and laying the groundwork for long‑term institutional strengthening. “The priority was restoring confidence, strengthening capability, and ensuring the police force was better positioned for long-term reform,” he said.

Incoming Minister Sir John Pundari expressed appreciation for the work done over the past two years and pledged to maintain momentum, emphasising discipline, professionalism, and long-term capacity building.

“I look forward to continuing this work, with a strong focus on improved governance, professionalism, and addressing long-term institutional challenges,” Sir John said.

Both leaders reaffirmed their shared goal of ensuring the safety and security of citizens nationwide, stressing the importance of a unified approach during the transition.
