The Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) today marked a major milestone with the launch of its Digital Transformation Strategy, a key step in modernizing tax services and supporting Papua New Guinea’s national digital agenda.

Speaking first at the event, representing the office of the Commissioner General, Mr. Loi, said the strategy would guide IRC toward safer, faster and more efficient services.

“This is a major moment for IRC. Our digital direction is now clearer, stronger and built for the future,” he said.

Commissioner Loi thanked staff for their work and said the strategy will help IRC modernize its systems and improve public trust through better technology and data management.

Australia Tax Office (ATO) Acting Director Howard Yi Sun also addressed the gathering, noting the importance of strong foundations in digital transformation.

He said the launch was “not just a ceremony, but a declaration of a modern tax administration.”

Mr. Sun added that digital identity, automation and quality data will be crucial to IRC’s progress.

“Better data leads to better decisions and stronger revenue,” he said.

He praised IRC for key achievements including its data management strategy, tax intelligence division and major upgrades to tax systems.

He encouraged IRC to continue investing in staff skills and understanding taxpayer needs.

Following these remarks, DICT Acting Deputy Secretary Digital Wing, Mr. Jessy Sekere, congratulated IRC for aligning the new strategy with national ICT laws and policies.

He warned that poor planning can create cyber risks.

“If technology is not adopted the right way, you create opportunities for cyber abuse,” he said.

DICT pledged full support as IRC begins implementing the strategy, calling it a strong contribution to the country’s wider digital transformation efforts.
