Papua New Guinea has made a significant jump in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI), moving from Tier 5 in 2020 to Tier 3 in 2024, doubling its global index score from 26.34 to over 58.
This impressive progress positions PNG as a leader in cybersecurity among Pacific nations, only trailing Vanuatu.
The country’s improvements have been driven by key developments in Legal Measures, Technical Measures, Organizational Measures, and Capacity Building.
Key initiatives, such as the National Cybersecurity Policy 2021, the Cybersecurity Operations Centre set up in 2023, and the National Cybersecurity Strategy 2024, have all played a role in strengthening PNG’s digital security.
Minister for Information and Communications Technology, Hon. Timothy Masiu, praised the country’s progress and emphasized that while much has been achieved, there is still work to be done.
PNG is now focusing on expanding its Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) and building cyber forensics capabilities with support from international partners like Australia, India, South Korea, and Israel.
“Our country’s cybersecurity journey has just begun, but we are committed to reaching the highest standards.
“We are determined to ensuring Papua New Guinea becomes a digital leader in the region,” Minister Masiu stated.
PNG’s advancements in cybersecurity are seen as a crucial step towards safeguarding the country’s digital future and aligning with global standards.
