Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has commended students of the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) and other tertiary institutions for their maturity and responsible conduct in recent advocacy activities, describing their engagement as “measured and thoughtful” in an era of misinformation and political undercurrents.

Marape said students had shown discipline and intellectual strength in raising national issues.

“Students are the voice of today and the leaders of tomorrow. Their advocacy is both necessary and valued, and I commend the manner in which they continue to raise concerns with respect and maturity,” he said.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to upholding freedom of expression, noting that since 2019, student voices have been welcomed through open dialogue.

Drawing from his own experience as a former student leader, he emphasized the importance of youth participation in shaping national discourse.

Marape also highlighted significant government investments in higher education, including expanded infrastructure funding, tuition fee support, welfare programs, and the rollout of higher education loan schemes.

He pointed to the expansion of STEM opportunities and overseas scholarships as evidence of the government’s commitment to building human capital.

“We are investing in our young people like never before expanding learning spaces, supporting fees and welfare, and ensuring our brightest minds have access to opportunities both at home and abroad,” he said.

While encouraging lawful avenues for grievances, Marape stressed the importance of using independent institutions such as the Ombudsman Commission and the Independent Commission Against Corruption to address concerns.

He urged students and citizens to remain focused and constructive as PNG marks its 50th anniversary, saying: “Government remains open and ready to listen, but we must all play our part in building a safe, stable, and united country.”
