Papua New Guinea and New Zealand have showcased their growing military partnership through a successful joint mortar drill at the Goldie River Training Depot in Central Province. The exercise, attended by high-level officials, highlights the strengthening defense ties and regional cooperation between the two nations.
During the event, Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) Minister Hon Billy Joseph emphasized the importance of their partnership.
“Our defence relationship with New Zealand is one of our strongest in the region and continues to grow,” he said.
“This collaborative spirit is instrumental in advancing our shared goals and aspirations.”
Minister Joseph praised New Zealand’s support in leadership training and regional assistance, noting that the collaboration extends beyond exercises to practical training at facilities like the Marine Barracks.
He also expressed optimism about developing a new Statement of Intent on Defence Engagement, which will build on earlier agreements and deepen cooperation.
New Zealand Prime Minister Right Honorable Christopher Luxon attended the event, highlighting the long-standing relationship between the two countries.
“Over the last 50 years, our nations have worked incredibly well together as friends and partners,” Luxon said. “
We now want to focus on the next 50 years of cooperation.”
Luxon praised the joint exercise, observing that it demonstrates both countries’ commitment to regional stability. “Our troops are learning from each other, PNGDF sharing jungle warfare and medical skills, while New Zealand contributes expertise in munitions and training,” he said.
“Security and prosperity go hand in hand, and our partnership is crucial to maintaining peace in the Pacific and Indo-Pacific regions.”
Both leaders expressed their intent to increase joint exercises and strengthen military ties further.
“We look forward to more cooperation and closer working relationships in the years ahead,” Luxon added.
The event underscores the importance of regional collaboration in ensuring peace and stability, with officials acknowledging that stronger military partnerships benefit the entire Pacific region.
