The Department of Information and Communications Technology Secretary Steven Matainaho delivered a powerful message at the University of Papua New Guinea’s 58th Graduation Ceremony in Lae today, challenging the graduating class of 2026 to go beyond simply consuming opportunities and instead become innovators and builders of the nation’s future.

Speaking from personal experience, Secretary Matainaho reminded students that success rarely follows a straight path.

He recounted his own unconventional journey from bus driver to eventually securing a role at the Office of Higher Education as proof that small beginnings and unexpected detours can lead to meaningful opportunities.

“Do not confuse delay with defeat. Do not confuse detours with destiny loss,” he emphasized.

Matainaho outlined four guiding principles for graduates:

  • Start small but keep moving forward. Every step is a stepping stone to the next.
  • Accept non-linear journeys. Careers may take unexpected turns, but persistence pays off.
  • Prepare for challenges. From economic pressures to personal tragedies, resilience will define character.
  • Build, don’t just consume. Graduates must look beyond comfort zones, innovate, and expand technology and ideas rather than simply using them.

He urged students to tie their ambitions to a higher purpose, whether serving their community, church, or country insisting that true success is measured not just in wealth or titles, but in impact.

In closing, Matainaho stressed that Papua New Guinea needs more than certificates; it needs courageous, ethical, and innovative leaders who can solve real problems.

“Titles change, seasons change, industry changes, technology changes, but purpose will endure,” he said.

He called on graduates to let their purpose guide their leadership and contribute to national building, reminding them that their impact can transcend generations.

Secretary Matainaho concluded congratulating graduates and their families, urging the class of 2026 to step forward not only as professionals but as entrepreneurs, leaders, and problem solvers who will help shape PNG’s future.
